I disagree. It's not like he taking performance enhancing drugs. I'd give him a pass on this, but not if it were steroids and the like.

I find it all pretty vacuous. He wins a gold medal as is thus held up as an example, placed on the sacred shrine of a Wheaties box for his athletic prowess. He fouls up in a human way, and he is no longer worthy of respect he was granted in the first place.
