Pet owners were worried Saturday that the pet food in their cupboard may be deadly after millions of containers of dog and cat food sold at major retailers across North America were recalled.
Menu Foods, the Ontario-based company that produced the pet food, said Saturday it was recalling dog food sold under 48 brands and cat food sold under 40 brands including Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba.

Must've been operator error (me, I mean) - try it now.

You can also look at the Menu Foods Website - they're the manufacturers of the problem foods. Their article starts:

Menu Foods Income Fund (the "Fund") (TSX:MEW.UN) today announced the precautionary recall of a portion of the dog and cat food it manufactured between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007. The recall is limited to "cuts and gravy" style pet food in cans and pouches manufactured at two of the Fund's United States facilities. These products are both manufactured and sold under private-label and are contract-manufactured for some national brands.

Over the past several days, the Fund has received feedback in the United States (none in Canada) raising concerns about pet food manufactured since early December, and its impact on the renal health of the pets consuming the products. Shortly after receipt of the first complaint, the Fund initiated a substantial battery of technical tests, conducted by both internal and external specialists, but has failed to identify any issues with the products in question. The Fund has, however, discovered that timing of the production associated with these complaints, coincides with the introduction of an ingredient from a new supplier. The Fund stopped using this ingredient shortly after this discovery and production since then has been undertaken using ingredients from another source.

We switched our dogs to raw food - ground turkey backs and necks and the miscellaneous bits of pigs, cows, chickens and ducks that you can find at the Asian butcher plus whatever veggies are leftover or getting a little old in the fridge. It's cheaper. They really look forward to dinner. They're losing weight. They don't poop as much. They're coats are healthier.

It's amazing just how deeply we care about the four-legged family members isn't it? We have a habit of taking in injured animals in my family...well, Erica says I have a habit of it anyway. Our cat had frost bite when we found him. Tucker had parvo when we got him and Ronin was starving to death and had a huge gash on his throat.

Thanks for posting the link for the article. Luckily, my critter food wasn't on the list.

The diet for our cats and our late woolly Husky has always been of the dry-crunchy kind, which is a relief. But it's scary to think how many animals have been jeopardized by a screw-up at a single manufacturer. These days, a problem at a single production facility can mean disaster all over the world...

Looks like Purina and Science Diet were both off the list, which is a small mercy anyway, especially in the case of Purina, with its very large share of the market...

Purina Friskies Chef's Blend for my kitty. *phew* Don't know what I'd do without her to reduce my blood pressure.

I know, thank God. Both of the kitties we adopted a couple weeks ago are on a combination of Science Diet and Purina. When that got low I was, and still am, going to switch to Purina ONE.

Excellent, you got lucky, Pam! It's weird, isn't it, that this one food plant seems to be involved in so many different product lines...
