The other day I was reading an article on line about Karate Gis. The article was about a well known company that made expensive Karate Gis. The company decided to create and sell a lesser quality Gi for a lower price to expand its market share. Several long term employees did not agree with a cheaper quality Gi and quit. Then they formed a new company to produce and sell high quality Karate Gis. Now I can't remember the name of either company. Nor have I been able to find them using google. Anyone familiar with this event? Thanks.

This is probably what I was reading:

Based on the information available, Tokyodo and Shureido are two different Japanese brands of martial arts equipment, particularly known for their karate uniforms (dogi or gi). Tokyodo was formerly known as Tokyo Shureido International.
Relationship:
  • Tokyodo was previously a branch or part of Shureido, specifically their Tokyo branch.
  • However, they subsequently separated or cut ties.
  • Some sources suggest that the name change from Tokyo Shureido to Tokyodo might have been due to an issue with the main Shureido company in Okinawa.
Differences in Gis:
  • Quality: Both brands are known for producing high-quality karate gis, but some users find that Tokyodo gis are less baggy compared to Shureido gis, while maintaining similar quality.
  • Cut: Tokyodo gis are described as having a rather narrow cut.
In summary, Tokyodo was once a part of Shureido but is now an independent company that continues to be a prominent supplier of martial arts equipment, particularly in Japan.

I think their Gi’s on their website still look quite baggy . Tokaido Gi’s are somewhat ā€œslimā€ fit compared.
