Hiking in Hawaii

I have been forming an experiential education program at a local high school where we plan and train for a major adventure somewhere in Hawaii. We chose to climb around the crater of Haleakala this year. The following pictures are of some of the training hikes we took. I'll finish with some pictures of the mountain. Enjoy!

Here are some photos from Mariner's Ridge. This hike begins in East Honolulu and goes to the top of the Ko'olau range. It's about three miles long and is relatively easy. Very kid friendly!

This next hike is right in my hometown. It's called the Lanikai Pillboxes. It meanders up a ridge to some old WWII era pillboxes and then traverses ridges and leads down into the next town. It's about 1.5 miles up to the pillboxes and another 3 to the next town down the shore.

This next hike is Manana Ridge. It's about six miles long and climbs down into a deep valley with a waterfall at the bottom. Then, it climbs back up into the Ko'olaus and goes through some amazing views of the interior part of Oahu.

Here is the Kaunala Loop on the North Shore of Oahu. It's about 5 miles long and takes you along the backside of one of the valleys up by Pupukea. It's a beautiful forested hike with some good views.
