Hagakure - Quote for the Day

I'm not sure this was actually written for warriors, but rather for those who wanted to emulate them and their tradition as Japan was relatively free of warring at the time it was written.
It was written as somewhat of a lament for what Yamamoto felt was being lost during a period extended of peace. Just as the Shogunate worried about the erosion of martial skills and so fabricated the concept of martial arts being for character/spiritual building in order to encourage continued practice, Yamamoto was also worried about moral decay among the samurai and wrote this for his clan’s samurai as a guide.

Entry 42

when a Warriors reputation has been damaged, he must not try to defend himself recklessly. The more one explains, the deeper the suspicion becomes.

The shortest method is to restore reputation through conduct. If sincere daily actions accumulate, an unjust reputation will eventually disappear of itself. Do not protect reputation with words, build reputation through actions.

Entry 50

When a warrior grows old, he must not obstruct the young. It is important to transmit wisdom born from experience, but one must not bind new ideas and the energy of the young with old values.

The times always change and the young live in those times. The role of an old warrior is to guide the young not to cut off the possibilities.

  • Mongol General: Hao! Dai ye! We won again! This is good, but what is best in life?
  • Mongol: The open steppe, fleet horse, falcons at your wrist, and the wind in your hair.
  • Mongol General: Wrong! Conan! What is best in life?
  • Conan: To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women.
  • Mongol General: That is good! That is good.
