He is 11 and has been taking taekwondo for a year. He is a serious hard working student.
I will miss my grandson, but I am happy he might find a better school.
Do you have any recommendations for schools in Madison Wisconsin?

I am from that area and consider it to me part of my old stomping grounds, but I’ve been away for a long time and was never connected to the martial arts schools there that would cater to his age group. Wish I could help, but I just don’t know any schools well enough. There are a lot of TDK schools though, I am sure he will find a good one.

Sure, there is plenty of TKD there, it won’t be hard to find a school. But do you know these two schools well enough to know that they are good schools? Do you personally recommend them? What is your experience with them, or did you just find them on google?

I guess I should explain in more detail.
My grandson was taught by the 8th black belt in the tiger rock system. He was good teacher.
My grandson has very good front, side, round, and hook kicks.
Even though his teacher knows how to walk properly and punch property.
Correct walking is not taught and very little work is done in proper hand technique.
They only learn one form!

I want him to learn traditional forms and hand technique,
one might learn from a TSD, karate, or long fist school.
IMO the teacher of the school is the important factor
Tiger rock did a great job giving him a love for MA arts.
I just felt it was a dead end of advancement without quality skills.
All the little things that make a big difference were not there.

I just think he needs a tradition education.
I maybe wrong, maybe you need to be older to do traditional MA.
I was 16 when I started MA and was willing to endure the hard work and pain.

Do you have any recommendations for schools in Madison Wisconsin?

Did you want him to stay with Tae Kwon Do or is he open to other Korean systems?

He is open to learning other MA. They will not be in Madison Wisconsin until sometime in Aug.

Then another option is Master David Kijek. He is a 5th degree Black Sash in Hwa Rang Do and is the Upper Midwest Regional Master. He's not running a full academy currently because he has taken on a mentorship position to help other schools and clubs grow in the region, however he's always open to taking on new students and he lives in Sun Prairie. If you want, I can message you his contact information and you can pass it on to your grandson's parents.

Paik’s academy might be worth checking out. They have been around for a long time, I remember seeing the school when I was a kid.

Also: the Madison capoeira group is where I began training capoeira on the UW campus. I doubt anyone is still there who was part of the group when I was there. But it might be worth checking out.

My grandson skipped from 5th grade to 7th grade. He is on the wrestling team and loves it.
After wrestling 2 hrs a day. He does not have the energy to do other martial arts.
He is skinny and the wrestling seems to be building some muscle.
I think this is the perfect art for him right now.
It does not cost anything and it makes him a place in a new school.
I am very happy for him.
