I really like how you see the scratches and marks on the blade; it's clear that he trains with that blade! I also like how the eyes seem so alive in the picture...

I like the way your portraiture is coming along in these B+W's.

Personal pref...have you ever tried "less busy" backgrounds? I'd like to see how some of these look with just flat black/gray etc. backgrounds. Not that the backgrounds "bother" me or are "bad" per se, but I think you have something going with the contrasts in the shots that would play better with a less patterned background.

I usually try a few variations, including full color as I go. Each background is custom, with my intent so try and reflect a bit of the subject in them.

I might try a standard background, see how those work though. :)

I love the shot itself of GM Pallen.

The backgrounds...not sure. I like the idea, and I think the ones I've liked best have been the ones added to Dr. Gyi and "Dragon Legs" (sorry forget his real name) the Muay Thai champion. They appear to enhance the person in the photo very well.

Personally I like the background. It balances the dark uniform without being too distracting. I think if it wasn`t a BW shot it might be too busy. but as is I think it works very well.

Damn fine work.

Looks to be a very distinguished gentleman and that blade doesn't offset him at all... it compliments him. It's the smile in his eyes that off set the blade. :)
Great job Bob ... as usual.
