Edit 2: How did I not see it coming that you’ve sparred with William Oliver?
The sad thing is that I've seen him show so much proof about him knowing literally anyone ever in the MA world, it didn't even phase me when he said that. My thought was just "oh yeah, Buka trained with him at some point".

I fought him in a point tourney. [I would have loved to have spent some time sparring him, he could have taught me tons]. New Jersey I think it was, but maybe New York, it was a long time ago and we used to go all over the place back then. He was a really nice man, very friendly. Kicked my butt all over the place. A really fun day, though.

He was one of the more talented people I ever competed against. And a class act. As people pass away, always makes me realize how incredibly lucky I've been.

There was another guy from around the same time as William Oliver, his name was Mike Warren. He was out of the D.C area, a Korean stylist. Oooh, mama, he was something else. Never really met him, just was introduced, but saw him fight a few times. One of the best I've ever seen.

Ever cross paths with the rest of the “Fighting Black Kings” - Charles Martin, Willie Williams, or Frank Clark?

No, never did.

I need to watch that documentary again, haven't seen it in years.

I’ve met Charles Martin several times, being in Seido myself. I’ve never had the pleasure to attend one of his classes though. He teaches occasionally at our honbu in NYC. He doesn’t look like he did in the movie (then again, who looks like they did 42 years ago?), but people I know who train at honbu tell me he’s still a real handful, to put it mildly.

Someone recently asked him about the movie, and he chuckled and shook his head saying “Is that movie STILL around?”

I bought them streaming version of the movie on Amazon Instant video for about $8. A few years ago. I’ve watched it so many times. It’s streaming for free last I checked under the title “The Strongest Karate.” Other than chopped up YouTube videos, that’s the only way I know to see it anymore. It’s part Kyokushin propaganda film, part blaxploitation film set to 70s porn-type music, and all badassery :)

Someone theorized Frank Dux stole the Bloodsport movie idea from that movie. It actually makes sense.

Edit: This week’s sign of the apocalypse - coming across 3 well-known MAists Buka HASN’T met! :)

That there is a review that makes someone like me order that puppy right away. I'm talking today, bro.

I’m going to watch it again tonight. Right after my daughters finish watching Despicable Me 3.

Sign me up for the alternative version that uses low kicks. They do have an alternative version right? lol. I'm not even sure if I can hold my kick out at a 90 degree angle lol.
Height is immaterial. When I was a 3rd Degree doing this form, my sidekick never went above waist high. I let the young whippersnappers do that high stuff.

Is the form traditionally meant to have that flow, or is that something unique to this particular MAist? It was very interesting, haven't seen something quite like it.
All the Songahm forms have flow to them. I think Chung-San shows it better than any of the others. But that is just my $0.02 worth.

I personally haven't been a fan of kicking high after I had an accident as a kid. I tried to kick higher than I was able as a kid and my standing leg slipped from underneath me. My knee struck the concrete. It's one of the few things I can remember from childhood.

Yeah, I'm already looking for it, too.

not that I can actually do either of these forms (well I can do a little bit of Lien Bu Quan), but Moon Moo in TKD and Lien Bu Quan in Longfist are incredible forms IMO. I really like watching the various different versions of Sanchin too, and our White Crane form which is very close to it (which embarassingly I do not remember the name of  ).

Okay I've been training a lot of forms lately and reconsidered my choice. Now i really like long form 5 as it just has a great flow to it

My favourites change from time to time, but for a good while now I've been only doing the Nine Step Push (Gau Bou Teui) from Bak Mei.

I don't think our lineage's exact version is anywhere available, but this one comes somewhat close:

I've been also giving love to our sword form, but I don't take it super seriously since there aren't much opportunities to train sword skills with anyone in a practical way.
