that stuff's often pretty fun, though i find the people doing it tend to take themselves way too seriously.
I find that with a lot of "clique" type groups. Some martial artists that I know are like that but thankfullly as they progress in the arts they tend to grow out of it.

I never did the LARP stuff as a kid but we did plenty of the BB gun wars...of course the war crimes tribunals (read "The parents found out") could get pretty ugly.

Society for the Creative Anarchism = Period reconstruction of various era's

There is another branch of the SCA as it is known that was into LARPing which is likely what these guys are.

Regular SCA guys are actually period recrators and as such typically have a fairly degree of understanding about their equipment and clothing and period.

A friend tried to drag me in to become a bard as I can sing apparently.
