Almost like a swap at some point. A few hundred years back Christians where in the dark ages, war in some form was almost constant, science came to a stand still and was usually seen as heresy, progress essentially went backwards. Asia and the Islamic countries made all the big discoveries.

wow, some of this strikes just a little too close to home right now...

constant war, teaching Intelligent Design as science...

During the crusades, the crusaders destroyed the library at Alexandria. Some historians said that the loss of all that literature set our progress in arts, science, and writing back by 1000 years.

Maybe that's why it's the year 2000 and we don't have our flying cars.
