hi all, ill explain the situation i'm in. joined an MMA gym about 3/4 months ago. Started to like thai boxing. Went to just thai boxing classes, but dont feel like the class is what im looking for. Got fitter, but dont think ive learnt enough in terms of muay thai. Havent learnt anything about blocking or clinch etc. Just drilling punch/kick sequences really. Not sure if this is normal. I am training because i want to compete also. Anyway there's a boxing gym nearby, which has a very good reputation, seems coaching is much more specified and in depth, better facilities, open all day etc. I prefer boxing over muay thai from what ive done. However, it bothers me that in a stand up even the best boxer could be done over by a strong leg kick from an average thai boxer. What do you think? Make average/sub par improvements in thai boxing in a year, or make larger improvements in boxing, which i think i would be better at by the way. Thanks in advance.

Does it matter? I mean yes a Thai boxer can kick a boxers leg but so what? If your a boxer you'll only be fighting boxers so kicks won't be an issue. Don't worry about all that nonsense just do what you want to do

yes, as above it would only seem to be a possible issue if you were fighting a MT fighter, do you think that is likely ?

My very first question is this; do you want to compete in MMA specifically or do you just want to compete in martial sports? If the latter, if you like boxing more and think you'd be better at boxing then just go box. If you want to do MMA specifically I expect you'll need more than just boxing, but I'll let people with more knowledge comment on how best to go about getting it.

My second question might be harder to answer. With your current Muay Thai class, are they really focused on making sure you get the fundamentals down solidly, or is it mostly fitness focused or something? Are there fighters at the school that are really good and seem to be able to fight the way you want to or is everyone just doing drills? If nobody in the school is fighting at the level you want to achieve then you should really look at other schools whether you stick with MMA/Muay Thai or not.

Started with just MMA, then specifically liked thai boxing. Not looking to compete in MMA as i would rather try and specialise, if you know what i mean. As with your second question, yes it appears more fitness orientated which is not really my focus. There is sparring but its mostly drills. There arent any other muay thai gyms in my area, its this mma club or the boxing club, if you can see the problem. Cheers

no this isn't likely, i suppose its more of a pride thing you know. But as you can see by the situation, i cant join another muay thai gym as this is only one in area. Its this or the boxing club.

There's plenty of problems in the world...choosing to train Muay Thai or boxing for your hobby is not a problem choose one then stick with it simple as that

very helpful. think you've interpreted my use of the word problem wrong. I don't sit up crying about it. I'm aware its my choice, just thought some input into the situation would be appreciated

I would try not to worry about this ^^^.

I'm not at all trying to tell you what to do, but it sounds like the boxing club may be a better fit for you. If you develop real, solid boxing skills they will be much more useful for sport or self defense than mediocre Muay Thai. If you like the training more you are likely to get more out of it and more likely to stick with it. If the training is better and also something that fits your talents better, there again you'll get better at it and be more likely to stick with it. Just because these are your only options now doesn't mean that you won't move or that something new won't open up at some point. If you're good at boxing it'll give you a great base if you add something else later and stands very nicely all on it's own.

This was the kinda thing i was thinking, cheers for your advice!

Welcome to Martial talk, bro.

From your description of the coaching, I’d go to the boxing gym. But remember, one of the best things in life a person can have is a choice.

Keep us posted and best of luck.

its rock, paper ,scissors,,
getting a good kick in the leg will wreck you if you do boxing or MT, getting a good punch on the noise will wreck you if you do boxing or MT,

if by the remotest change you end up fighting a MT guy, just try not to get kicked, that's exactly the same position as if you were studying MT
