Hey everyone,
Thanks to @Wing Woo Gar's thread MT member meeting?, I've created a poll to gather information towards planning a meetup. Basically who's interested, what are they interested in, and when. Unfortunately, the survey site I used didn't allow for long responses, so if you had something to add, but didn't have the space, feel free to add comments here.
Here is the survey link: MartialTalk Meetup Poll

If there's anything useful I could add, I'd be willing to offer a segment. I'm not used to teaching folks outside the aiki arts, so I'm having trouble thinking of what might be useful in this wider context.

Honestly, I think it would just be fun to see all the different perspectives we could get from the different participants.

This could be by presenting material completely within the context of a particular art (for example, you demonstrating aiki principles or Kirk teaching historical sabre methods).

Or it could be by showing something from within our arts which would be more widely applicable. For example, I expect the majority of attendees would not be groundfighting specialists. So rather than me showing the fine details of how to armbar an opponent from guard, it might be more useful for me to teach a class on how to survive and get back to your feet if someone takes you down.

Paging @lklawson , as he lives close enough to potentially come down and participate if he is interested. If he's willing to teach a session, he would have some material that probably most people won't have seen.
Sure. There's lots of fun stuff potentially of interest.

I might be able to talk Randal Gustitis into a coming too.

Peace favor your sword,
Kirk

I am happy for anything people are willing to teach me.

So far we've got 10 responses (if including myself). Going to wait over the weekend to do anything specific since not everyone's on here daily, but don't want to wait to long before continuing, and have it just die out.

So far, it seems like the time that works best for most of the respondents is either Summer or Spring 2024, having a seminar-style workshop. Also a couple people mentioned seeing if we can get a block of a hotel, but figuring that out will have to wait for a bit.

Assuming nothing drastic changes in the poll over the weekend, next week I'll offer specific dates, that way people have a week to think about when would work best for them. The goal will be to offer two in spring, two in summer and one in fall, and see which weekend works with the most people. With the exception of Tony, since it's his gym so he's kinda mandatory, I think the fairest way to do it is whichever weekend the most people are able to go, is the one that we'll go with. (I know some people have it depend on work/health/etc., still fill out the date survey. If you actively don't want yours to count towards the decision because you're iffy, I'll add an extra question where you can choose that).

Then I'll create a group PM with everyone interested once we get closer to whatever date it is, so we can figure out logistics. The way group PM's work in MT, you'll be able to leave it if you wish, and we can invite other people later if someone missed this and wants to join.

Thoughts?

I live closer, but it is still over 800 miles away, if I lived closer, I'd be there too

I like the basics and free flow from there with approaches, concepts and theories applied. For example I was explaining how a Jow Ga long fist technique works and why it works and then 2 weeks later someone posted an MMA fight showing exactly what I was explaining. I find value in things like that because it becomes good reference points. It also helps to reduce the assumption that something in a technique needs to be changed or modernized.

I'm really big on the validity of martial arts techniques so anything that helps bring more understanding is a plus. The is especially important because System A may have some insight that helps someone to understand a similar technique in system B.

I also want to have an opportunity to try techniques against various systems because it's my theory that some technique are specifically designed to be used against certain systems. If I can refine that for Jow Ga then it will go a long way in the preservation and accuracy of Jow Ga Application.

Yeah, even if we end up having a seminar format with mini-classes by various instructors, I do want to make sure we set aside some free format time where we can just play together and try out different ideas with different people.
