It's not much swimming - maybe 30-40 feet, usually. The challenge is the cold water (mountain lake in April).
I graduated high school in 1981 and in February of that year me and 20 of my friends swam across a spot on the Tennessee river at Kentucky lake, about 100 feet across. It was lightly snowing. The count has dwindled but at least 5 or so have done it every year in February. It is very brisk getting in and when you get out but once acclimated, not horrible. A fun challenge.

This isn't nearly that cold, but certainly colder than most of us would choose to swim in...except that a bunch of us do seem to choose to swim in it each year.

Have a great time guys, smash iiiiiit! Can't wait to hear all about it :)

Some photos from the event. Always fun. I failed to scale one of the vertical obstacles - it wasn't even very tall, only about 8 feet. And that really bummed me out - I tried twice, climbed all the way to the top but couldn't make it over. But I did get over the 20-foot tall one and 25-foot tall one. As usual, having gotten up and over, I looked back and wondered what the hell was I doing up there and what possessed me to climb up to the height of almost a four-story building and then slide down on the other side on my butt. :)

To clarify for other folks, the Hobbit made it to the top of that obstacle, and physically could make it over, but her acrophobia kicked in and she couldn't make herself move to the transition.

poop happens. She has several steps on me doing this height thing. I ain't judging!
I did make it over this one. It's about 15 - 20' tall. @gpseymour actually did the run and jump thing, and I used the slats to climb up.

.... and this one - this is the tallest one, the one that's 25'. It did freak me out, because the net part is stretched over a gap between two towers built of industrial shipping containers.

Looks like a blast. It is an actual race or does each person go at their own pace? I am really slow but would love to do this in May when it comes to Nashville.

I imagine you have too, I have been kayaking in east TN during August in mountain water that was COLD. I always though some of the reason is that you are never fully in or out of the water.
