So, my wife was asked to do a cake for a co-workers' son's bar mitzvah. We decided it'd be our gift to him, as all of the places that would do it charged something in the several hundreds of dollars on up.

The result of my wife's baking skills (single oven, using only 5 dowel rods and cardboard cutouts under each tier):

The stats:
Weight: Approximately 40 pounds
Height: 14.75 inches
Boxes of cake mixed used: 15
Total man-hours from start to finish: 9.5
Cake type: chocolate (bottom tier), yellow (middle), marble (top)
Icing type: home-made buttercream
Number served: Approximately 200

The aftermath, after 100 people were served:

Cool! Cake making is an art I don't have the knack for.

I hope they appreciated all the work that went into it. Beautiful job.

Seeing as how the mother cried when she saw it, and several people told my wife it was the best cake they'd ever tasted, I think they did. Thanks! :)

Very impressive and very nicely and respectfully done. I'm sure many appreciated the effort and the thoughts behind the work.
Looks yummy.
