Survival Pack

It would be nice. But your brain would explode. And your pack would be a container truck.

Ok. Let's take one scenario of a bushfire.

To make it from your house to your car you are going to need a bunch of ppe.

Mask, goggles, fire retardant clothes, boots. All really important if you wanted to run through a fire.

That is a backpack full of stuff before you have gone ten meters.

Unless its not a fire.

In which case its a backpack full of junk. Because what you really needed was a fist full of cash, some I.D. and a phone charger to get a hotel room.

I have tried them. And used them and failed and failed to create a catch all.

Because we have natural disasters. I have used bug out bags. And been humping around with a ton of the wrong stuff.

And it makes the discussion almost impossible.

What do I put in my bug out bag?

Oh. Well in case of nuclear war.

No wait. You need zombie defence.

Hey. You can't do without a change of clothes for work.

You bug out you die. You always have to shelter in place. There is no reason to even have a bag.

Everyone is just firing everything and hoping something sticks.

That story is what binds the kit together. And makes the discussion cohesive and productive.
The story for my bag is a ā€œget homeā€ bag. I’m about five miles from home when I’m at work. There is a medium sized river between me and home. There are several bridges, both foot and highway that cross it within 2 miles of me. Now obviously I want to drive if possible but I can make it home on foot in less than an hour without running. My pack has knife, basic emergency med supplies, a few hundred bucks in small bills, a liter of water, gloves, hat, sunglasses, a 10 mm pistol and two extra magazines, a waterproof poncho, multi tool, some paracord, flashlight, emergency radio, power bar… all in a small non military style backpack. That is for getting home on foot. My truck a more extensive pack under the back seat with tent, food, H2O filter, clothes, and tools etc. All this is likely very unnecessary, but remember that I go into wilderness regularly and there is no cellphone service there. If my truck broke down or I was unable to drive, I would be just fine for 3 days with what’s in my truck. If I needed to walk and abandon the truck I might swap out a few things in the pack. All this to say, it’s better to be home than bug out. I’m often up a river or creek or in the mountains so it’s not zombies but rather my own foolishness causing myself an injury whilst chasing fish that would be my most likely survival scenario.

Cigarettes- not for smoking. If you soak them in water, they're a disinfectant. If you get a leech on you you can persuade the sod to let go and keep its filthy mouthparts to itself by using the lit end. In some countries, they're as good as hard currency. Break one apart and you have a firelighter. If you get desparate, you're going to die and help is not on its way, you can smoke one.

Madness and obsession in pursuit of the fish... I can relate

Nice.

I did come across a nice survival fishing kit. If that is your jam.

You have a folding knife for survival? You’ll get crud in the folding and locking mechanism which might cause it to fail. I love folders, but worry they might break under batoning

I went for the K-Bar Becker B2 in Magnacut and replaced the hollow plastic handles with a far grippier solid micarta.

I tried it. But it was too fat and too heavy. And I am too poor for magnacut. (Which would be great for the rust resistance as we get cyclones and floods. And I might be wet for days)

Otherwise I don't think I have seen a triad lock break at the lock. The blade will go first.

What price a reliable shiny, shiny knife!šŸ¤“ Heft helps in dispatching zombies!

No I haven’t either…I’m just blindly repeating the ā€˜experts’ without experience!

Look. At some point. Some Chinese company is going to do a magnacut I can afford. And I will be right on that.

(Even with the 4 Max. You will notice I showed the scout. Which is the cheap steel version.)

In regards to gunk. Cold steel do washers over bearings. Which make them a bit heavier to open. But generally easier to clean. Obviously there is still a mechanism. So there is still oportunity for crap to stuff the knife up.

Your money will be useless come the apocalypse. Spend it now of cool knives.😈

I have one I made and put into a sealed tin that had mints in it. It’s specifically for the trout that are everywhere around here. I also made a tinder kit that has a mixture of cotton balls, Vaseline, magnesium shavings, waxed cedar slivers and all weather match heads. I have tried several mixtures but you open this sealed tin and put a spark on this and it will burn in a torrential downpour. It’s a guaranteed fire for at least 7 minutes no matter the conditions. Also, the potassium permanganate packets the florist gives to keep flowers fresh… I you poke a couple holes in the packet and then drip engine coolant ( ethylene glycol ) onto the packet, you will have an instant chemical fire. I typically have a few packets in my glove compartment as I am into redundant systems. You an easily get these from the florist for almost nothing.

Oh almost forgot but corn chips made with corn oil are excellent fire tinder. For the Americans, Fritos are the best and burn like a wick for a few minutes each but also contain salt, and fat and can be used as figure 4 trap bait for rodents and the like.

How bout threatening other NATO members?
If you are talking about Greenland, this goes all the way back to Andrew Johnson.

Oh, I have Many knives! But yes, my EDC is folding.
I get that is not a filet knife, but the blade looks awfully tall.

Regarding the property of our Scandinavian ally, I understand the context, but cannot conscience nor condone the delivery. It’s unseemly, uncouth, unnecessary, and at this late date it amounts to more performative bloviation. One can only see such displays as a poor attempt at distraction…epsteinaminophen anyone?

Some of you are too young to appreciate the cold war and before.

I’m not too young to appreciate cogent diction from world leaders. I haven’t seen it in quite some time in this part of the world. Now I know that they have had the best and brightest at the helm in the last decade and that is what makes it so sad. All things being equal, I expect a modest grasp of the national language in a leader.

That is basically for a harsh overnight stay if there is a cyclone or something. I might have to put down in someone's shed.

So in general.

blow up mattress, blanky, pillow. rope.

Metho cooker. Water bottle, some Mre meals, coffee, broth. Plastic cup. Some water filters, a bottle of store water.

Poncho, hat, gloves, mask, sunglasses, buff scarf thing.

First aid kit, tourniquet, emergency bandage. Asprin.

Toothbrush, toothpaste, sunscreen, bodywash

Head torch, knife, spoon, saw.

Wall charger, power bank, electric lighter, leads for stuff. AMFM radio

And some random stuff. Candles, fire steel, tinder, that fishing kit I mentioned,
