Indeed a sad and shocking thing to have happened. It's not the sort of thing that we are used to here, as you can imagine. It is made all the worse as the WPC's had no warning and no idea that they were walking into a dangerous situation. As well as sadness I feel anger too, I have to confess. What sort of man shoots dead two unarmed officers, leaving aside the fact that they were women, who were no threat to him at all?

They didn't just walk into a dangerous situation, they were deliberately lured into the place where they were killed, it was cold blooded pre-meditated murder. A bogus 999 call was made and the officers who went to investigate were gunned down and a grenade thrown. The killer later walked into a police station and gave himself up, he is also wanted in connection with the murder of a father and son.

If you would like to post a message of condolance please use this http://www.gmp.police.uk/mainsite/cond.htm I know fellow officers will want to.

Ambush murders are becoming more and more frequent here I'm sad to see it spreading across the ocean. Keep your heads on a swivel lady's and gentleman. Be careful over there Tez.

PC Hughes was buried today. So very sad and I was moved indeed at some of the words spoken by her superiors and colleagues:

Insp Ian Hanson, chairman of the Greater Manchester branch of the Police Federation, which represents rank-and-file officers, said: "I would implore every decent member of Greater Manchester to come out to pay their own tribute and stand side-by-side with the police officers of Greater Manchester. I would say to people ‘we police your communities when you need us – now we need you to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with us’. There’s an incredible amount of emotion surrounding these services. GMP is made up of people not uniforms. We have lost two of our family."

Unfortunately this type of situation has occurred here too.

The Walsh Street police shootings was the 1988 murder of two Victoria Police officers, Constables Steven Tynan, 22, and Damian Eyre, 20. The officers were responding to a report of an abandoned car when they were gunned down about 4.50am in Walsh Street, South Yarra, Australia on 12 October 1988.

Makes me favour the death penalty for certain crimes.
