Hello All

I'm seeking some input. I'm in the process of revising my requirement sheets up to 1st dan for my dojang. I recently changed the schedule for classes, so this has become a necessity. My goal is to main the knowledge my teacher gave me and to create a well rounded MAist who is a capable fighter at first dan. I will post the requirement sheets by rank. Please comment on my curriculum and let me know if you think it will accomplish my goals above. I realize that some of this will be shop talk, so please ask for clarification.

On of the things that martial arts marketing companies suggest, which actually makes sense to me, is that you start out light on requirements and get heavier at each belt rank.

Take it for what its worth, but it sense to me you have alot required at green belt, could you spread it out? Let the student start to feel like a TSD'ist then hit them with the responsibilties of inclusive learning?

I thought about that. Yet, in order to understand the bunkai in the forms, tons of that stuff needs to be on there. Also, a foundation is being built with that stuff for upper ranks.

One of the problems is that my teacher is much more intuitive and loose then I am. His requirement sheets were more like you suggested, but I've got reems of paper filled with "requirements" that he expected to see at tests. None of that stuff was on a sheet.

I feel like I have to be more organized in order to be a good teacher.

Have you thought about combining the two approachs, the intellectual and the intutitive? Have some stuff required (Basics, standing locks, throws) and say two bunkai for each form


Not to dimish your effort or intentions, but the requirement sheets would look quite daunting to the new student.

I once heard a quote from a movie about quantum physics (so it may or may not be true). The theory was the all time, events happened simultaneously, it is the human mind that organizes events into a framework it itself can understand.

I think of my art the same way. There are literally thousands of styles. I can not learn them all-I learn my system then expand outward to iclude other stles ideas, concepts. Does my fumbly explanation make any sense?

One of my teachers, SBN Talavera, told me once, that you are your own best teacher. Thinking on this, and reading what you put forth, no matter what requirements you put forth for your students, it does nessarily mean they will be a well rounded fighter. They may know elements of this and that, or even, remember only elements of this or that they are required to, but what makes them a well rounded fighter on the street is a bit different then what makes a black belt (midnightblue belt) in Tang Soo Do. You can only require so much, and ask so much before it is up to them whether or not they will be a ready for "reality" or whether they only practice for something they probebly (statisticly speaking) will never face. It is more important they they can defeat themselves then someone else...

My teacher focused on intuitive and instinctual aspects of training. Much of what we did/do "just kind of flowed" from the seeds that were planted. I think that it is a testament to how good of a teacher he is, because I haven't reached that point yet.

BTW - Are there any specific things that you think should be moved to higher ranks or perhaps to the dan level?

First you are very ambitious and I think it is cool you are trying to preserve everything from your teacher.

However it is very material rich. I would set it up so that the student who comes to class twice a week, and some outside work should be able to pass a test every 3 to 6 months. Brown belt every 6 to 9 months.

You have 4 forms required at green belt, and 6 new forms at blue belt, plus a ton of other requirements. I just fear that you will chase away students.

I was told that black belt means mastered the basics, not master the arts. Or Black belt is where the real learning begins.

I think that you are trying to devolp a protege in 2 years

These are all good points. Thanks. However, it takes 5 years to reach shodan in our art. Time between tests are one year for white to green and green to red. Two years from red to brown. One year from brown to black.

Sure 5 years is about the norm, I guess you have a lot fewer belts then most

This sounds like a GREAT formula for creating a well rounded martial artist who, while retaining a sound background in traditional TSD forms and techniques, has a large enough "toolkit" to survive in all ranges of fighting instead of just kick/punch range. It sounds like a program that I would be interested in were I in your area. When I took TSD years ago, while the Dojang had FAR, FAR greater quality control than the TKD factory (not disrespecting TKD, just the McDojang I attended) - we were taught little, if anything about surviving in any situation that wasn't kick/punch in a sparring stance. I recognize that this was before the UFC and ALL schools have had to change some, but I think your program is well ahead of the curve and far ahead (in well-roundedness) than my old school would be even today.

Five years sounds about right for a dan in TSD.

Perahps a few of these could be moved to brown belt in place of red. It depends, though, upon whether you're testing familiarity or mastery. I'd sure rather a part time student in a striking art have to demonstrate mastery of some of these techniques in their fourth year of a striking art as opposed to their third year. Just my opinion though. You've done a lot of work here and I'd check out your dojang in a heartbeat.
