I've recently started my journey through BJJ instructionals. The first one I've purchased and watched is "The Knee Cut Roadmap" by Josh McKinney. I found this instructional from his Youtube tier list series where he rated the knee cut as an SS-Tier guard pass and plugged this instructional. Since the knee cut is already my favorite pass, I figured I'd give it a go.

This is a very well put-together series. Josh has a tremendous amount of experience developing this system, so it makes a lot of sense that he'd put out good work. Overall, what you get is a detailed, structured approach that explains the following:
  1. How should you utilize the instructional in your training?
  2. What are the main principles of passing, especially the way this system operates?
  3. How do you perform the technique in a laboratory setting?
  4. How do you finish the technique, and how do you troubleshoot various counters or defenses your opponent might use.
  5. How do you enter into this technique to attack a variety of guard positions?
  6. What are the guard positions this technique just doesn't work well for, and what are a few simple techniques to use there?
While this was a very well put-together instructional, I did have a couple of minor complaints:
  • This was specifically focused on gi. While most of the techniques and concepts could be applied in no-gi, a few of the troubleshooting steps used gi grips as a counter. I wish there was a variant for no-gi in those cases.
  • The main position in the video is the "alpha knee cut" as he calls it, which starts with a knee staple on their body. He doesn't go into too much detail on the staple itself, which is the detail that would've been the most helpful to me.
Overall, this was an excellent instructional. I am very happy with it. I rate this an S-tier instructional.
Tiers are F, D, C, B, A, S, SS.
