Let me start this review by telling you a story. A few weeks ago, Friday before a tournament, we had a purple belt drop in. She liked to play DLR. As soon as she got me in DLR, I folded and she got the easy sweep. I just failed every time to even base properly against it. We both competed the next day.
  • My opponent pulled guard into DLR, swept me nearly instantly, and won with a nasty bow-and-arrow choke. The fight lasted about 20-something seconds.
  • The drop-in pulled guard into DLR in every round, she got easily passed and clawed her way back to win every round, eventually taking home the gold.
The point is, my DLR defense was so bad that I gave her false confidence in her DLR game going into the tournament.

Anyway, I decided to fix that, and purchased "Attacking the De La Riva" by Nathan Medelsohn on BJJ Fanatics. This was a wonderful video. One quirk is the instructor says "m'kay" after every sentence. I did find it kinda funny, m'kay? But that's honestly my biggest criticism of this video. The only other negative, if you can even call it that, is that he didn't take advantage of the video format to use editing and angles. He's just recording instruction in front of a tripod. And that's perfectly fine. Some of the other instructionals that I've reviewed have spoiled me.

I've gotten a lot better at defending and attack DLR from watching this video. There's some habits I've needed to break, some habits I've needed to learn, and some habits I've needed to fix (usually timing issues). I've learned a few ideas about gripping the legs that I can apply to attacking other guards and improve my passing game as a whole.

He does a great job explaining what he's talking about, and is very conscious of making sure every technique is performed from enough angles to see the details. All of the important things are done very well in this video. Because of that, I give this an overall score of SS-tier.
Tiers are F, D, C, B, A, S, and SS.

Cute story chief, honestly I'd just shrimp out of the DLR instantly.

My southern shrimp style kung fu has yet to be defeated.
