If the cat needed oxygen, it was probably sucking down some CO2 (or similar), that made it very ill, and probably didn't have much strength to resist against it. When fluffy started to feel better, he/she probably started to freak out. I've also noticed (from playing with my cat) that sometimes cats will stop moving if something is all over there face (like an oxygen mask).
