Michael Sessions is too young to drink champagne legally, but the 18-year-old high school senior has reason to celebrate: He unofficially won a race for mayor Tuesday by defeating the baby boomer incumbent.

Sessions, who turned 18 on Sept. 22, ran as a write-in candidate because he was too young to get on the ballot in the spring. The young politician used $700 from a summer job to fund his door-to-door campaign in Hillsdale, Mich., a town of about 9,000.

I love this, just like I like to see an independent win a major race. It reminds people that anyone can go into politics--not just those the two major parties approve of and support.

Sessions plans to devote after-school hours to the job and use his bedroom as his office.

Ah, the Bill Clinton approach!

"sorry I missed curfew mom, had a crisis at work"

in a way, I guess he has some degree of authority over his parents. interesting at 18

Good question. I have mixed feelings about that.

:lol2: ... and Kennedy, and Johnson, and Nixon, and ....... %-}

But...will it help him get dates?

It'll sure bring a different perspective on things to City Hall. I hope the city council (if applicable?) gives him a fair chance.

I think it's great. I also hope he has the maturity to do the job...

oh scratch that...I guess that really doesn't matter....

Ditto... Exactly what I was thinking... but your follow up, makes sense too. Cant mess up any worse, or be too imature. :-)

Just to be an A-Hole he should put a curfew on anyone older than 19. See how mom and dad likes that one. :2xBird2:

Oh the irony:rolleyes:. You can die for your country in the military when your 16, you can even run for political power when your 18! And yet you can drink a couple beers until your 21. Doesn't that sound a little strange:uhyeah:? I mean will shop owners really deny the mayor a drink just because he isn't 21? The mayor can make laws that impact the lives of adults decades older than and yet he can't have a drink:lol:.

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but the article said "Unofficial". Since he was too young to get on the ballot, he's likely to young to hold office. He may have to settle for the satisfaction of being the "unofficial" winner. Unless, that is, the legal age was 18 and he was 17 at the time of filling. If he's lucky, though, he'll be too young. Being mayor sounds like fun...until you are mayor. Then it's a big headache, with budgets, city councilmen, complaining people, meetings, meetings, meetings, whining city employees, more meetings.....

I'm sure it won't be the last time he runs for office.

This is what democracy needs...more novelty acts.

I cannot place the location, but Montana or somewhere in that area of the US, I saw a show on a young man who was Mayor of his small town of a few hundred (* I think it might have been that large *), while he was still in high school. I saw a show on it on TLC, or some channel like that.

I wish my memory on that stuff was better.

I understood he was too young then to get on the ballot, not too young now to serve.
It's of course very possible. I merely picked up on the "unofficial" part of the article, and was wondering why they put it in those terms.

I hope it is....young people can be very helpful...and if not I don't think he could be much worse than any other politician.

I was thinking someday of running for a political office....maybe i should hire him for my campaign manager...lol (I'm 24 though....so i probably could get on the ballot)
