Most Important News Story of 2004

Do you mean the stories that were in the news or the stories that should have been in the news?

Whatever you deem to be the most important. Was it:
- the election
- the hurricanes
- martha stewart going to jail
- scott peterson going to jail
- the tsunami
or ---

Big Nick got his black belt?

Oh....important stories...

I think the tsunami's are going to have the biggest impact on the world in the long run..150,000 lives washed away in the blink of an eye...

In all seriousness, I don't think any event since WWII ended has had the lasting impact on such a large portion of the world that the tsunami's will have. Even contemplating it is hard to do.

Interesting question.

Last year they asked what the most interesting legal stories were of a number of legal experts. What did we get? Kobe Bryan, Scott Peterson, Michael Jackson. That year the Supreme Court overtuned the sodomy laws of the last 13 states but only ONE of the lawyers mentioned that on the two channels I saw running this query. The press practically ignored it.

This year? Here are twelve that were important. I haven't presented them in any particular order. Sorry that Michael Jackson has to take a back seat to these.

The December Tsunami.
George Bush being re-elected.
The battle of Fallujah.
The crisis in Darfur.
The hostage tragedy in Beslan.
The Abu Ghraib scandal.
The Florida hurricanes.
The publication of the 9/11 Comission's report.
Yasser Arafat's death.
Reagan died.
The Madrid bombings.
Gay marriages sprouting up around the country.

Okay you guys. Not quite what I had in mind.

Steve and Technopunk are on the right track.

I understand that personal 'news stories' are important as well, but that wasn't my original intent with the thread. Perhaps someone else wants to start one of those.

I'd probably have to vote for the tsunamis.

848 United States Service Men and Women died in Iraq in the calendar year 2004. A year in which we were a) ostensible in control or b) serving at the request of the interim adminstration (client administration).
