While the rest of the nation marked the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, family, friends and strangers gathered to also remember Marine Lance Cpl. Ross Steven Carver.

Carver, 21, of Rocky Point, died Sept. 3 while conducting combat operations for Operation Enduring Freedom in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune.
...
The themes centered on his love for the Marine Corps and his nature to help others. Robert said that before his little brother turned 17 he had already tried to join the Marines.
“He must’ve been in the third grade when he first tried to get into the Marine Corps. ... If you ask me, he came out of the womb screaming war cries and ‘oorahs,’ ” he said.
To prepare for his future career, Ross joined Laney High School’s JROTC program. He also enjoyed karate at Cape Fear Martial Arts and earned a large collection of trophies.
Because he was older, Robert ended up joining the Marine Corps first. Ross began asking questions about the boot camp experience and how he could get ready for Parris Island. His brother said Ross’ fitness level was already up to Corps standards before he enlisted.
