We saw this Nicholas Cage film Thursday evening. The first half was dull, but the second half had some powerful moments. It was slightly preachy at times, and the character of "Col. Southern" was too distracting a reference for me--it took me out of the movie--but overall it was understated rather than in-your-face and made its points well. On balance, I recommend it (but not for kids), as a movie--leaving aside whether or not I agree with the message that arms dealers are the biggest problem we face.

Roger Ebert gave it 3.5 stars. I used to put a lot of stock in his reviews but more and more I find myself out of sync with him. In this case, though, I thought the movie succeeded.

We're thinking about whether "The Brothers Grimm" (which is still playing here) is worthwhile. The reviews aren't so flattering, but we think our kids might like it anyway.
