It might not be your cup of tea; it’s sophisticated, tasteful and complex. I’d recommend ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’

I’m not a huge fan of kabuki, to be honest, but this seems to be a very popular film, bringing in a lot of money… mind you, the same could be said of the Barbie movie…Give it a try!

I really like Japanese horror movies too,
But yes, I will give the “kokuho” a glance if I find it, it may surprise me.
I was recommended a Japanese TV series about some doctor stuff, I gave it a try and really liked it - Jin - was the name.

Yes(I guess, I don’t remember any direct action swordplay) A brain surgeon is brought back in time(around the end of samurai era?) find himself becom somewhat ”inventor” of modern medicine, befriends Royama(famous historical samurai) who plays a mysterious roll in the plot(a spin off series was made focus on Royama).
Long time ago I watched that TV series so I might gotten some things wrong there in my little plot summary

Yes I really like Takeshi Kitano’s movies, but much of my liking is also about the settings in Japan, it has an atmosphere I like, “Brother” is set in the US ? and thats ok too, I will see if I can find the movie, thanks for the tip

The narrative begins melodramatically in 1964 Nagasaki. Following the tragic murder of his Yakuza boss father, young Kikuo is taken in by a revered Kabuki master. There, he trains alongside the master's biological son, Shinsuke. As decades pass and the boys grow into men, an electric and poignant tension takes hold. Their dynamic evolves from brotherhood to a fiercely competitive clash between Kikuo's transcendent natural talent and Shinsuke's devoted adherence to tradition.

Visually, Kokuhō is an absolute triumph. Cinematographer Sofian El Fani captures the ornate costumes, exquisite stage makeup, and delicate architecture with breathtaking clarity. The stage performances are filmed with a loving, lingering gaze, bringing the rigorous artistry of onnagata (men playing female roles) to life. These theatrical interludes do more than just showcase a beautiful 400-year-old art form; they serve as a stunning metaphor for the characters' personal lives, masking offstage pain and tragedy beneath brilliant oshiroi makeup.
