How do you burn patterns into your sticks. I have sticks that are already tempered, but want to burn patterns in to them so that I have easily recognizable sticks. I used a propane torch, but it left bubbles. What does anyone esls who has tried this use?

Back several decades ago my Silat teacher's uncle sold rattan sticks to the Inosanto Academy. He wanted to jazz them up a little, so he came burnt designs into them with a bicycle gear heat up to red and pressed onto the baston.
