Literally means breath work. The Chinese believe that certain physical movements, stances, mental concentration and breathing patterns can improve the bodies physical and mental functions. It is based on the theory that the body has different types of energies and that said energies need to be balanced by regular qi gong practice.

Qi gong is an art that requires long-term instruction. From what I've heard, it takes a year or so to understand and benefit from the basics and many more years to perfect. Even more important is finding an instructor who is experienced and qualified to teach the art as there are McDojo qi gong instructors as well.

To cut down on unqualified practitioners in Asia, the Chinese government created a panel to regulate the practice. Qi gong practice in the U.S. isn't regulated.

So if the average Joe, like myself, wishes to study qi gong or meditation, how would they be able to make an intelligent decision regarding an instructor?

Boar? Anyone?
