Had a discussion that went like this. Mind you, this is a summary not a verbatim account.
Did you hear what they are doing now? How the hell can they get away with it? When they hell are they going to do something about it? Well what can you do?
Sound familiar?
Yeah, half our current politics threads huh?
Here's some answers.
How the hell can they get away with it?
Easy. You let them.
When they hell are they going to do something about it?
Never, unless it threatens them.
Well what can you do?
Keep rewarding them for a job poorly done.
In the US, it says "We The People..". We are supposed to be in control of our government. We are supposed to be our government. We are supposed to pick people who will represent us, and work towards our goals and meeting our needs. Our representatives are supposed to be accountable to us, to answer to us, to work for us.
Doesn't seem like it works that way huh?
How often do you hear people say "Well what can you do?" as they throw their hands up in surrender to the situation.
Well, you can get educated, get involved, and vote.
Oh wait, here it comes.....
"I don't have time to look at the issues"
Make it. Grab a copy of Time, or the NY Times and read it on lunch, take it into the john with you, read it on the bus, give up that cigarette break and make it a reading break, get up 10 minutes earlier, rather that surf that porn site, hit CNN or FOX or MSNBC or Slashdot etc and skim headlines. You can find time to forward that joke email, you can find time to keep up on your government and elected officials actions being done in your name.
"I don't have time to vote"
Make it. You're allowed time to vote. Use it. Leave a half hour earlier, stay half an hour later, eat a light dinner, skip your after dinner nap, shag faster.
"My vote won't count so I'm not going to bother"
-EVERY- vote counts. It doesn't matter if your choice wins. Each year various 3rd parties numbers grow and decline as the issues they favor become more and less important. If enough people vote for a particular 3rd party, it begins to reach critical mass, earn automatic ballot placement, federal campaign funding, extra media attention, and increased private funding. As it grows, it begins to pick up minor seats, increasing its chances at the major and big seat.
The only vote that doesn't count, is the one not cast.
Over the last decade I've read the same thing online, growing disgust at the way those who are supposed to be working for us, instead dance to their corporate masters bidding, working for the corporate states interests, and not ours. I read the polls that show that the majority of the people are against various things yet the government does them anyway.
Well, get off your asses and do something about it.
Send a message that you won't take it any more.
Fire them!
Stop voting for "the lesser of 2 evils" and start voting for the people who aren't "more of the same".
Bombard your elected representatives with calls and letters expressing what you want them to do.
Don't sit on your *** watching the latest "Reality TV" pap, go out an make a difference.
"But I'm just one person"
Yep. You are. But so was Lincoln, Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Roosevelt, Patton, Alexander, Caesar, Emiril, Flay, and Smith. See a pattern here folks? 1 person, makes a difference. But they got up off the couch, did their bit, built momentum and it went from there.
The government has forgotten that it works for us.
They have forgotten that they are not an elected nobility.
They have forgotten that they should be doing what we want, not what they want, not what GM or IBM or AIG want.
"We The People" once meant something.
It's time it means something again.
This November, vote for the people who will do what you want done.
Not the "Lesser of 2 evils"
Not the one who looks better
Not the one your buddy likes
Not the one first on the list
Vote for the one you -want-, and send a message that we aren't going to take it anymore.
It won't happen overnight. It won't happen in November. It might take 4-12 years. But you can retake your government and force it to bow to the will of the people.
Will you do it, or will you make excuses and let the bastards win?
Did you hear what they are doing now? How the hell can they get away with it? When they hell are they going to do something about it? Well what can you do?
