the target was a liberal
Exactly! Her "joke" about shooting the President was inline with the BDS (Bush Derangement Syndrome) of the network (shouldn't a network be bigger to be called a network?) and thus, permissible.

He called the Duke U rape victim a "ho"

This particular snippet is bothering me.

I don't know the qualifications that make a person a 'ho', but she was a stripper and worked as an escort and she had DNA evidence from multiple males who weren't the lacrosse players she accused nor even her own boyfriend.

She was NOT a Duke U rape victim and no words are harsh enough to describe her for what she put her victims through.

Limbaugh has repeatedly called people liars, crazy, insane, mentally ill and so have his counterparts.

Please don't see this as a defense of the big windbag, Limbaugh, but in regards to the double-standard, I see shades of grey and not black and white here. I wouldn't put calling someone 'crazy' at the same level as calling somebody a 'big ****ing whore'.

Um... excuse me; but, this has to do with the entertainment industry.
Sean

Sorry Sean, I read the thread as being about media based political punditry and it's dire state as the participants race for the lowest common denominator.

I'd just sat through a couple of hours watching the quite sobering effects of what happens when democracy is not treated seriously enough and is allowed to be replaced with another system (viz Stalingrad during the Second World War). The contrast with the petty and salacious commentary from present American media 'political mouthpieces' was marked.

Hence, my less than politic burble by which brief outburst I meant to entreat a more 'adult' appraoch to the political process where decisions were made rationally rather than via media sound-bites or party-line acceptance.

I happen to believe in free speech, but let's bear in mind that Randi Rhodes was NOT "off the clock" when she made her comments. She was speaking at a company function. And what was the company: Clear Channel, one of the most right wing media conglomerates in the nation. Yeah, last I checked, AirAmerica Radio was owned by Clear Channel. So let's rethink the implication of her being suspended over badmouthing Clinton. Bottom line, I think she was suspended for using foul language, not for her political view.

And bear in mind it was a suspension. Randy Rhodes just quit her job by the way. That was her right just as it was Clear Channel's right to suspend her. Free speech was never the issue; if someone goes to jail, then its an issue.

Just a small aside but on topic, the F word has become more and more common here so much so it's hardly a swear word anymore. It's used more and more on the radio and the television.Nothing happens to the people who use it now, it's even used in drama without comment. The more people accept it's use the more it becomes acceptable which is a great pity I think.

I agree with that aside, Irene - it's trite but coarsen the language and you eventually coarsen the mind. I'd say more but it's OT really so I'll shush .

-I'm sure others have heard this already, but maybe not. Randi Rhodes is back on the air, Nova M Radio? I'm not familiar with that radio company. But even more amusing, is that she wasn't really suspended for her comments. Air America radio was unhappy with her contract, which on April 6th, had a clause that she could quit without any penalties, should she choose to do so. They threatened her with termination if she didn't renegotiate the contract, and they were willing to pay her more money. They were the ones who fed the stand-up comments to the media. I had thought it was odd that the night in San Francisco was almost 2 weeks before the suspension, and nobody anywhere had said anything about it.

-I don't know, I'm sure there is more to it than that, but it wouldn't suprise me, knowing how Air America Radio has treated past radio personalities. It all seems like another part of the scam that gov't/bigbusiness/media have going. In this case, not so much a political thing, just the bottom line/ratings thing. Whatever.

I'm glad she is gone myself. I've tolerated just about enough.
