From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_mcmahon#Military_service:

During World War II, McMahon was a fighter pilot in the United States Marine Corps serving as a flight instructor and test pilot. He was a decorated pilot and was discharged in 1946, remaining in the reserves.

After college, McMahon returned to active duty. He was sent to Korea in February 1953. He flew unarmed O-1E Bird Dogs on 85 tactical air control and artillery spotting missions. He remained in the Marine Corps Reserve, retiring with the rank of Colonel in 1966 and was then commissioned as a Brigadier General in the California Air National Guard.

Reading this article about the situation with the great star and how there had to be a "bail-out" of sorts to help with his medical bills and how there are no funeral plans made, makes his passing even more sad
McMahon's medical and financial problems kept him in the headlines in his last years. It was reported in June 2008 that he was facing possible foreclosure on his Beverly Hills home. By year's end, a deal was worked out allowing him to stay in his home, but legal action involving other alleged debts continued.
Among those who had stepped up with offers of help was Donald Trump.
"When I was at the Wharton School of Business I'd watch him every night," Trump told the Los Angeles Times in August. "How could this happen?"
. The man was great as a side-kick for Carson, held his own as a host (Star Search) and as a pitchman that millions had trusted.

He'll be long remembered for being who he is.
RIP Ed
