Although evolution is the best explaination we have, I don't see a problem with re-examing those things we hold to be self-evident. After all, it was axiomatic that objects fall down "just because" they did, until Newton observed an apple falling and had a thought.

Evolution as a defined scientific mechanism is being re-examined, refined, and re-thought all the time. That's what the entire branch of evolutionary biology is about.

The religious fundamentalists who push the "intelligent design" agenda don't have any actual interest in science. From the article Steve linked to:

"It's clear from the beginning that this is not a real science discussion. This is a showcase for intelligent design," said Jack Krebs, vice president of Kansas Citizens for Science, which is boycotting the four days of hearings. "They have created a straw man. They are trying to make science stand for atheism so they can fight atheism."
