I am having second thoughts about this.
Oh, I like the fact that he is dead. I am just worried about the aftermath now that he has not been found guilty.
Today in the IHT there as a piece by Milan Panic, who was a huge political opponent of Milosevic when Panic was prime minister of Yugoslavia. He was forced out of office and blames the Clinton presidency for playing exactly into Milosevic's hands and giving him the clout to get rid of his opponents. He obviously is no fan of Milosevic and knows the types of things that go on in politics in that part of the world.
Now he is saying that there may be a huge swell of Serb nationalism based on the lie that Milosevic was killed. All the guys who benefited from Milosevic in power are still eager to gain power again and this may be the chance they are waiting for. Again, the actions by the West may play into the hands of Serb nationalists.
Milosevic's son is already openly accusing the Hague of killing him, and three newspapers in Belgrade have that theme on their front page. Russia is getting in on the act as well. They supported Milosevic when he was at his worst and still desire sway over the region. A team of forensic experts from Moscow said they don't trust the results of the autopsy and are on their way.
It would seem that he died due to his own actions. Traces of rifampicin were found in him. That would counter the medicine he was given for his high blood pressure. It looks like he was trying to convince people that he could not be cured by Western doctors and had to be sent to Russia and escape justice.
But now I fear that the most popular theory in Belgrade will involve a conspiracy theory that somehow thinks that they were so sneaky that they could slip him the drug, but too incompetent to make sure that the blood tests would remain under wraps.
