The HEMA groups in my region seem to not work with any sort of pole weapons or hammers, anyone know if this is normal?

You can get halberd training training in some CMA schools but it's a considered a high level weapon (is years of basic training first), and the sparring is limited because these are dangerous long weapons even if they are training versions.

Because polearms can generate so much impact, you need buhurt gear (full plate harness) in order to safely spar full contact even with training weapons. Plate mail is expensive and most HEMA groups are focused on sword fencing, which can be done with lighter protective gear.

My club does a bit of polearm training occasionally, but it’s generally just drilling techniques from the manuals and some light, very controlled sparring.
