I am not a citizen of the European Union, and underwent similar procedures when entering states within the EU as well as when entering several other states worldwide. These practices, while both relatively new and the source of many privacy concerns, are being increasingly adopted worldwide. Some states, such as China, have yet to implement such a system for a variety of reasons, including issues such as cost, logistics and privacy concerns.
