Hagakure - Quote for the Day

I use a speech to text tool on my iPad and don’t always check it. Honisz is the surname of a friend of mine🫤

Entry 110

A warrior must cultivate the eye that sees through to the essence of things. The power to discern the true cause or meaning behind surface appearances leads to correct judgment.

This eye can be polished only through the accumulation of daily observation and reflection. Do not look only at what is visible; cultivate the habit of trying to see what is not visible.

@Gyakuto cultivates trying to see what is not visible by surreptitiously standing near with a mirror on his shoe…

Entry 112

A warrior must strictly observe the appointed time for promises when others. To be late is to steal the other persons time and is an act of lacking respect.

If unavoidable circumstances arise, informing the other person beforehand, it’s proper courtesy. One who keeps time is trusted, and one who is careless with time is looked down upon. Keeping small promises bills great trust.

Entry 115

A warrior must put what he has learned, into actual action. No matter how many books one reads, and no matter how many teachings one receives, they have no meaning if they are not practiced.

Knowledge becomes flesh and blood only through action. There is a great distance between ā€˜knowing’ and ā€˜being able to do’. Only daily practice fills that distance.

Entry 119

Even in times of peace, a warrior must keep himself prepared to go to war at any moment. Do not neglect the care of weapons, continue training the body, and do not let the spirit slacking.

The longer peace continues the easier it is to neglect such a preparation. But the difference between one who is prepared and one who is not, appears decisively in times of emergency. Preparation is not something that exists only for emergencies; it is something accumulated in peaceful times.

Entry 120

The teachings of this, Book One, all return to a single point: in every situation, do not lose pride and sincerity as a warrior but devote yourself, without sparing your life, for the sake of Lord and domain.

Difficult teachings and simple principles alike all point toward this one thing. The Warriors way is not understood by the head; it is something embodied in daily living. Spend your life continuing to walk that path.

I don’t care so much for all this talk of ā€œthe lordā€. The ā€œlordā€ may be corrupt…nomsayin?

Entry 2

A warrior must value his ties with people. Every meeting between one person and another has some meaning.

Even if the other person is someone one will only meet once, it is important to face that person sincerely. One who treats connections carelessly will lose his important ties without even noticing.
