What I teach is more linear footwork, there are some side and or angle steping to adjust. The foot work is a short stance usually in oblique or a natural walking or standing stance.

As to triangles you put to lines together and you get an angle between them. If you add a third you get a triangle. There are some techniques that use frame work that many call triangle frame work.

I also tell people to protect the triangle in front them. Drop your arms down. Bring your forwarms up and only move your elbows out an inch or two at most and have the fingers touch. This triangle is the area you block. Assume the stick is in your dominate hand then when you block ( close your fingers as if gripping a cane ) and this is where your block should be. It allows for easy access to the opponents cane and you do not have to extend your off hand out and reach into is strength or triangle.

If you cannot picture, let me know I will try again.

Thanks
