How Low Can You Go?

A while back I was watching some of the cool videos posted In the Albo Kali Silat forum. A lot of the movements are performed really low to the ground. Heck, a lot are done right on the ground. A lot of other systems also "hunker-down" in very deep stances. Yet, the older I get and the more I train, the worse my knees complain! It's getting to the point that, it I had to go that deep to defend myself, I'd probably be better off just handing over my weapon to my attacker and asking for a quick and merciful end. Now, I know some of the old masters could get down low and move like lighting into their advanced years. But that ain't me. How about you guys? Can you defend yourself without doing squats?
