Would he be frowned upon by his former instructor?

Is this type of thing encouraged or discouraged?

I hate to lose students but I want them to learn all they can. If the person was not happy with what I taught or thought he/she could learn more somewhere else then the/she should go.
Would I be happy –most likely not but as I said I want my students to be happy and to learn
