Iraqs now in the beginning of a Civil War as the various factions which were long held in check by Saddam fight for power. That, combined with the influx of foriegn fighters such as Al Queda (sp) are hindering things. The majority of the countrys on an upswing, however the area around Bagdad and Tikrit (a major Baath area) is where the bulk of the problems are being reported from.

A more pressing concern are the rising number of suicides among US troops there which are slightly above the 'normal' numbers.

That is a cause for concern. Hopefully this is being taken into consideration by top brass when looking at how long to keep individual soldiers out there.

That and the fact that the majority of casualties are younger soldiers who have been in the service for a short time.
I think that in some ways we are seeing the touchy feely, group hug, sociology experiment military that the Clintons attempted to create bearing its rotten fruit.
Also I think the brass need to spend a little more time in pre-deployment train ups i.e. creating occupation scenarios at JRTC and CMTC. Time to go back to the lessons learned in post war Germany and Japan..

To my mind this says more about how relatively easy the initial victory was than anything else. It's unfortunate news, but really not surprising to me. We're in the same situation in Iraq as any govt. that's fighting terrorists--losses are to be expected, regrettably.
