Quanfa literally means fist method/technique/way.

Its not really the name of a style. It is one of the many collective terms that have been used for CMA over the centuries. Quanfa, Gongfu, Wushu, Kuoshu, all serve the same essential purpose as a collective noun.

Its not much different to referring to the Japanese martial arts collectively as Bujutsu or Budo. These terms, though carry additional cultural baggage that quan fa does not.

Greetings.

Interestingly enough, as said before quan fa means "fist" (quan) "method" fa.

Yet the "Fa" here is not that easy to translate. Here's why.

Fa also refers to Buddhist teaching method or Buddhist teaching.

Thus Quan Fa has a Chan Buddhist component to it, specially in the instruction method... very similar to that of a Buddhist Master teaching a Disciple. There is a "transmission" and sometimes ritual ascribed to it in the way it is taught.

Also, there styles were primarily for defense and combat in line with Buddhist teachings and the protection of practitioners, which explains why many Quan Fa styles have so much taoist, confusian and buddhist undertones to them.

Hope that helps!
