It's not a time period in terms of years, but in terms of hours of actual work put in.

Is it necessarily? Do we understand everything in the moment in which it is taught or is understanding and learning a more gradual process where the 'a hah!' happens weeks or maybe even months later?

There is a lot to be said for aging, whether we are talking about wine or martial arts.
