I teach privately and have only charged $25 for an hour at a local park. One student pays me $60 because he likes how I teach. After seeing what others are charging, I feel I should raise my rate. I want to fair to people who couldn't afford more.
An idea I toyed with is offering a lower rate for the first few sessions. If you get the notion they can’t afford more, you can let them keep that rate. If what I teach could be easily taught in 1-1 lessons (it can’t - too many falls for me, no way for them to watch me throw/lock/grapple), I’d still be teaching, and would look for a place for group classes when I had a few regulars again. It’s kind of how I did things 10 years go when I could still take all the falls for everyone.
