So what would be some physical factors that may have a positive or negative effect on our chi? Or our ability to use chi.

Like what we eat or our daily activities.

Agreed, Yang Jwing Ming's book is a great recommendation, also check out Mantak Chia's books.

The physical and the energetic are completely interconnected. Your body, mind, and energy and all parts of a system that is you.

A serious qigong practice will significantly benefit your health and well being but it can only go so far unless you attend to the other factors in your life as well. Eat well. Keep your body active and fit. Avoid excesses.

Some adhere to a very strict diet such as macrobiotics to keep their physical system running clean and smooth. This leads to a clearer mind and energy level.

To what level you take the practice and related disciplines is determined by what your goals are.
