A teen is defying a rare genetic disorder to excel in judo.

And Queen Elizabeth student Jack Hodgson’s latest feat was to win a gold medal at the 2012 Commonwealth Championships in Cardiff.

Fifteen-year-old Jack has Usher Syndrome, which has caused him to be profoundly deaf and impaired his sight, but competes in both mainstream judo and the disabled category of the sport.

I competed against a blind guy in shiai back in 1978-he'd hitchhiked from Florida for the tournament!

Guy pretty much had me for lunch.

I think the spirit of martial arts is beautifully and sweetly encapsulated here. He does not make a thing of his condition, and but moreover, does not let it become an obstacle to achieving his goals. Little stories like this are very affirming I think as a martial artist and as a human being. Thank you for posting

Leaves little excuse for those who can, when those they say can not do. Very cool. I once saw a youtube video of a gentlemen who had lost both an arm and a leg demonstrating Jui Jitsu at full speed and he was quite good. Shows the confidence that can come with training.
