Mas Oyama reverse-engineered Kyokushinkai from muay Thai after the Thais kicked some Japanese butts in open full-contact tourneys?
I don't know about that, but I did a demo with a kyokushin sensei and the man had me hold two baseball bats. Then he broke both of them with a thai kick.

Mas Oyama didn't reverse-engineer MT, but he did add MT type kicks to his Kyokushin due to challenge matches with MT practitioners. There was a very highly publicised event (in Thailand) between Kyokushin and MT, where the Kyokushin practitioners won 2 out of 3 matches.
