Look at Spyderco's Byrd line... It's their "you can't afford the real thing, so here's a close second" line. I actually have one for my duty knife -- so that I don't get pissed if I lose it. Losing a $30 to $40 knife is lots better than $70 plus...

Best for what? Filleting fish? Cutting carpet? Self defense? Just general chores? If it`s the last one, I`d go with an Opinel in a size you like. Hard to find more bang for your buck. If one-hand opening is a must, I`d look for an inexpensive Spyderco.

Also remember you don`t have to buy everything retail. Back when Spyderco Plice model were retailing for 100-110 dollars I got one at a flea market for 25 because the guy didn`t know what he had.
