The early days of Limalama

I started my martial art training with Richard Nunez who was a Kenpo instructor in 1966. Seventeen months I earned my Brown belt and tested by GM Ed Parker
in Kenpo. In those days we students fought for promotion in tournaments and back at the studio fighting with higher belts. In those days to get promoted you
had to fight your way up. In the fall of 1967 I entered the Army and in December was on leave and learned Master Nunez has changed his martial art to Limalama.
It was kept very quiet that Master Nunez was training with Masters Tino and four other black belts including Tiny Lefiti since 1964. It was a new American martial art that was being
created and formed in Southern California Los Angeles. Master Nunez saw GM Tino fight in 1964 Long Beach tournament of Ed Parker's and introduced himself and pursued Tino
about his hands and how Tino fought so fast with multiple strikes to head and body. Master Nunez wanted Tino to teach him, but, Tino thought he was kidding and was not interested.
That did not stop Master Nunez he kept pursuing GM Tino and stated he would have other black belts to learn and of course Tino would get paid for his knowledge. Master Tino at this
time was part of Ed Parker's American Kenpo and Tino asked Parker about Tino teaching and Parker said was something he should pursue. Because of Kenpo influence Slapping Hands was changed to Whipping Hands in Limalama. Master Tiny Lefiti one of the six men a cousin to Tino was a master in Kung Fu Slapping Hands and this became a big part of the training with Hawiian and Samoen
Lua techniques with the fast flowing hand strikes and bone breaks and nerve damage. The influence in Limalama martila art is Lua, Slapping Hands, Kenpo, Kung Fu, Aikido and boxing. Today all six
men who started Limalama are gone, GM Richard Nunez was the last master to pass away in December 2021. GM Nunez created his own style of Limalama Nokaoi and in 1992 was the offical date
for this new style of Limalama. I teach at three schools in Los Angeles keeping the influence of Limalama Nokaoi for the future. Nokaoi shield 001.jpg
