Intel, HP, Microsoft, NEC, and Texas Instruments have begun work on the USB 3.0 standard. It is expected to transfer speeds of 4.8 gbps, ten times faster than the current standard. It is also suppose to be backwards compatible with 1.1 and 2.0 standards. They are also trying to lower the power consumption and improve efficiency, and are hoping to make it with copper and fiber in mind so they get higher speeds in the future. Wireless USB is also going to be updated, although it is not going to be as fast it is going to rise to 1 gbps instead of the 480 mbps it is now. They have not given an expected release date but they are reporting that hopes are for a ready date sometime in the middle of 2009.
