Learn to work with, not against, your instincts. by Michael T. Rayburn

According to FBI statistics, almost 95 percent of officer-involved shootings (OISs) occur at 21 feet or less, with approximately 75 percent occurring at 10 feet or less. It is also a fact that well over half of all OISs occur at 5 feet or less. With this being said, how much actual cover can there be between you and the felon who is trying to take your life?

pretty good article...

IMO, shooting the bad guy comes in second place to NOT GETTING SHOT. People who envision and train for a "dodge city" type of shoot-out (where both participants stand there duellist style and try to shoot each) other need to revise their thinking. As the article pointed out, the overwhelming majority of gunfights take place at conversational distance. It has been said that "proximity negates skill." What that means is that even though you have tons of hours of formal training, the gangbanger with a stolen .25 and zero training can still kill you. I'm a firm believer in immediate exlposive movement off the line of attack (when possible) so that you present less of a target.

shameless plug ;): this is why I like XS Big-Dot sights...even when moving they stand out like a billboard.
