Man's courageous act saved lives at off-road race Tue Aug 17, 5:03 pm ET By Mike Krumboltz Saturday’s crash at the California 200 off-road race took the lives of eight spectators. Several more were seriously injured when a truck lost control and barreled into the crowd. Witnesses are saying that were it not for Andrew Therrien, 22, who pushed others out of the way and lost his life in the process, even more would have died, including his girlfriend and 3-year-old daughter. The accident took place in the Mojave Desert. At the popular race, spectators are urged to stand back from the track for their own safety. However, many fans sneak forward to catch a better glimpse as the four-wheel-drive racers zoom by. That curiosity proved tragic for Mr. Therrien and several others. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ynews/ynews_ts3432
I say stupidity because a video of said race showed spectators right along the edges of the designated track. Hundreds of people all aligned on both sides of the track where trucks on SAND wheeling along at high speeds. Then one of them (not surprisingly) loses control and crashes among the crowd killing seven and injuring others, because folks wanted to be right up along side the race course. How stupid is that? This man's quick thinking pulled several out of the way and effectively saved their lives though at the cost of his own. Tragic loss. Prayers to his family.

Sad, because it was an easily avoidable tragedy. What Therrien apparently lacked in common sense, though, he made up for with courage and self-sacrifice.
